Welcome to Lister
Headteacher: Alice Clay
Welcome to Lister!
Our school motto is Always Aiming for Excellence. We believe passionately that students in Newham have the right to as good an education as at any other school in the country. We challenge our students to work hard, and to excel in every area that they can. We seek to equip our students to go on to the very best sixth forms and universities which they are able to enter.
We are also committed to being an inclusive school which values every member of the school community, and which gives everyone the chance to succeed..
We aim to create a calm, safe, orderly environment where everyone – staff and students – are encouraged to be kind, polite and considerate. We also aim to make students take responsibility for themselves.
We are proud of our school, and proud that increasing numbers of parents are making Lister their first choice. We are supported by the Newham Community Learning Trust and benefit hugely from our partnership with three other secondary schools and two primary schools in the Borough.
All our students have the opportunity to study a broad curriculum, which will ensure they are ready for the top colleges and universities. We have excellent teaching in the traditional academic subjects, and a broad and rich curriculum with our students having the chance to study Art, Computing, Photography, Spanish, Business Studies, Dance, Drama, and much more. The school also offers a number of vocational courses. We identify our brightest Mathematicians and Scientists to allow them to follow a programme which exposes them beyond the prescribed national curriculum. Students identified to follow this pathway have started to graduate with top grades in Maths and in Physics.
Pastoral care
Our lessons are grouped in the traditional way with students studying alongside their own age group. We also have a year group system, with each year group being led by a Head of Year and a Pastoral Manager to oversee their learning, wellbeing and engagement. We put a strong emphasis on building relationships with pupils and their families and carers, with form tutor periods and assemblies four mornings a week.
Pupils learn a carefully designed programme of personal, social and health education in which we educate all pupils to become active, tolerant and successful citizens of the twenty-first century. This is underpinned by a strong careers provision to ensure that our pupils set and meet their goals and move on to fulfilling futures.
We look forward to welcoming you to Lister.
