Careers

Careers Education at Lister

Lister Community School is committed to ensuring that our students are effectively prepared for life after school.  We ensure academic rigour, supported by excellent teaching, and aim to develop in every student the values, skills and behaviours needed to progress in life.  Our students follow a programme of curricular and extra-curricular activities that cultivate a range of valuable employability skills, such as self-management, teamwork, business and customer awareness, problem-solving, and application of literacy, numeracy and ICT.  The development of these skills, combined with a strong emphasis on resilience, provides our students with the ability to make successful transitions into further education, employment and training.

Information on the range of CEIAG activities available to all Lister Community School students can be found in the latest version of the Careers Education, Information and Guidance Policy. Our Provider Access Statement can also be found within this policy.

Additional information for students

Students are encouraged to review the information provided on our key careers and progression links document.

WOW Week

is an exciting programme designed to broaden our students’ understanding of future careers and inspire them to think ambitiously about their futures.

Through meaningful encounters with professionals from a variety of sectors, including culinary arts, healthcare, investment banking, and law, students will explore diverse career pathways. This initiative helps them gain a deeper understanding of the essential skills, qualifications, and opportunities available across different industries.

We have a fantastic lineup of engaging activities and workshops scheduled throughout the week:

Monday

  • Carousel Workshops: interactive sessions led by a range of external industry professionals.
  • External Work Experience: 45 students begin their external placements for the week.

Tuesday

  • Food & Dentistry Workshop: a deep dive into careers within these specialised sectors.

Wednesday

  • Induction trainee teachers workshop: preparing pupils to lead induction activities and support.

Tuesday – Friday

  • CEIAG Lessons: tailored subject specific careers guidance delivered by Year 10 class teachers during regular lessons as per the Y10 teaching timetable.

Thursday – Friday

  • Trainee Teachers Programme: insightful sessions for students interested in entering the field of education and opportunity to lead induction lessons.

Friday

  • Jack Petchey ‘Talk About the Future’ Workshop: empowering sessions focused on communication and future planning.

Closing Event: The week ends on Friday afternoon with a student-led Celebration Assembly to reflect on their learning and celebrate their achievements.
