Our curriculum vision

At Lister Community School in Newham, our curriculum is designed to inspire, challenge, and prepare every student for success at GCSE, further education, and beyond. As a co-educational secondary school, we believe in providing a broad and balanced education that nurtures academic achievement, creativity, personal growth, and a lifelong love of learning.

At Lister Community School we will provide a curriculum which:

  • Creates confident, thoughtful, and engaged young people who are ready to succeed in a global society.

  • Delivers a world-class education that is academically rigorous and prepares students for further education, employment, and lifelong learning.

  • Inspires a love of learning and encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

  • Is personalised to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring every learner reaches their full potential.

Our curriculum offer

At Lister Community School we are proud to offer an inclusive, engaging, challenging broad and balanced curriculum. 

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Our three-year KS3 pathway allows students to explore a broad range of subjects and build a strong foundation for GCSEs and life beyond school. Students study:

  • Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education, PE, and PSHE

  • Languages: French or Spanish

  • Humanities: History and Geography

  • Creative and Performing Arts: Art, Drama, Music, and Dance

  • Technology: Computing, Design Technology, and Food Technology

Students literate in a community language are encouraged to take a GCSE in that language before the end of KS3.

Our purpose-built facilities – theatre, art studio, music studios, technology rooms, and PE spaces – support outstanding opportunities in sports, arts, music, and drama, alongside the academic curriculum.

Key Stage 4 (Years  10-11)

At KS4, students continue with the core curriculum and select option subjects tailored to their interests and career aspirations.

Core subjects include:

  • English Language & Literature

  • Maths

  • Science (combined or triple)

  • Religious Studies

  • PE & PSHE

  • Most students continue with a Modern Foreign Language

Option subjects include:

  • Art & Design, Drama, Dance, Music, Photography

  • Computer Science, Business Studies

  • Geography, History

  • Food Preparation & Nutrition

  • Additional Languages, Statistics, Further Maths

Our inclusive curriculum ensures all students, including those with SEND, can thrive and access academic challenge.

The way we structure our curriculum is reviewed on an annual basis.  The programme below is for the year 2024 – 2025.
